The newest issue is almost ready to send to the printers’, and (as usual) I’m so excited to watch it turn from a notebook full of printed-off, marked-up articles into a beautiful, inspiring magazine. It’s always such a joy to hold that first copy in my hands. You can read more about the newest issue at the LFLF website.
Since the magazine is being published more irregularly now, I’ve reflected that change on the site. Every subscription is still six issues, but the average time between issues is about 3 months. As an unschooling mother with an active 9-year-old boy and an ever-growing, highly-demanding business, this change will take a lot of weight off my shoulders.
Also, Live Free Learn Free: The First Year is finally out!! We’ve gathered together each issue from our first year and bound them together into a beautiful book filled with unschooling wisdom from organic learners. Live Free Learn Free: The Second Year will likely be finished within a few days, and I’ll be announcing both of them, along with the newest issue, when everything’s ready.
Finally, I wanted to let you in on a secret I’ve been keeping. The website has been undergoing an enormous redesign. It will sport a completely different look and feel, as well as a new, more intuitive structure. We’re also including more information on unschooling in general, a calendar of unschooling events and cool happenings, an interactive section on unschooling in the news, and much more. Overall, the site will be more community-based and informative, and more easily navigable. We’re all impatiently working to get the redesign up and running, but we have no set timetable, as it’s really a labor of love. Hopefully, we’ll be announcing the new site with the next few months.

We’ve uploaded two articles from the most recent issue of Live Free Learn Free to our website.
Learning Together: Mixing Unschooling and University
by Rebecca Ellis
I’m a part-time university student at a large research university in Ontario, Canada. Currently, I’m working on a Bachelor of Arts in Socio-cultural Anthropology. In a few weeks, I’ll be presenting a paper at an academic conference for the first time. My long term goal is to get a PhD in Anthropology. I am also an unschooling mother of two.

Abundance

Whenever my husband tells me I am crazy, I know I am on to something. One day last November I told him about a family that lived in a cabin in the woods on $500 a year. I imagined their lives to be particularly rich without any of the material trappings. The thought of raising our young son close to nature with the full attention of both of his parents seemed ideal to me. No distractions. The focus could be on what is essential in life.

Well, I’m finally back online and making my way through several hundred emails. If it takes me a while to respond, don’t worry. I’m reading and typing as fast as I can.
And in between? I’m reinstalling all my programs. Luckily, no data was lost (phew!), but this has certainly been a huge (and unexpected) project.

Well, it’s been a week since my computer fizzled and died a sad, sputtering death. We’ve been working to get it up and running, but we’ve had to replace several components. Luckily, nothing was lost, data-wise, but it’s certainly been a PITA. Sigh…. I haven’t been able to access my email accounts since last Saturday. I can only imagine the backlog of mail that awaits. I’ve been stealing time on various computers when I get a chance, approving members and posts on the Unschooling Resources group, approving friend requests on the LFLF MySpace page, etc., but I’m wringing my hands and tearing out my hair thinking of all the things I should be doing right now. Instead, I’ve been spending far too much time running back and forth between electronics stores with my absolutely amazing and wonderfully helpful brother, trying to find a motherboard/processor and RAM combo that are compatible. Strangely, this is much more difficult than it sounds.
Anyway, I’m hoping to be back online tomorrow - fingers crossed….

Kids at Fairhaven School, a democratically run Sudbury school in Maryland, participated in the making of a video over the last few years. In it, they talk about their school, about learning, about friendships, and more. The trailer is intriguing. This is, perhaps, as close to unschooling as a school can get.

Here’s a great article by Glenna Whitley of the Dallas Observer from October of 2005 (thanks to Kay from the Rural Unschoolers Yahoo group):
I learned about unschooling from Linda and Dan Jacobs, my sister and her husband. I knew they home schooled their twins, Ryan and Austin, 11. When they moved back to Houston from California last year, I noticed the kids read a lot but had no curriculum. They stayed up late and got up when they wanted to. When she and Dan explained they were unschoolers, I thought, “Uh-oh, living on the West Coast turned my sister into a nut.” Read more

Kris Bordessa, author of
recently had a wonderful older article, A Balancing Act, published by Live Free Learn Free. In it, she quipped, “All too soon, they will hit puberty and decide that I am the most embarrassing person they know.” Now, several years after she penned that line, does her prediction hold true? Not quite.

As you can see, the blog has moved to the LFLF website. It’s been a long time coming, and I can’t say the wait wasn’t at least partially influenced by my unfamiliarity with php. But, I decided it was time to delve in and get my hands muddy, or my brain muddled - whichever you prefer.
I’ll probably be playing around with the features (and with the script, itself) over the next few weeks, but for now, it looks okay. There’s no guarantee I won’t completely muck things up while I mess around with it, but I’ll try my best not to….
