The Nightmare Before… Thanksgiving?

Kenzie’s been sick for the past few days - fever, headache, sore throat, stuffy nose…. Poor kiddo…. So, we decided we’d wake up early Thanksgiving morning, take showers, eat breakfast, and see how he felt. Still crappy.
With my brother’s compromised immunity, and with my grandmother and great-aunt well into their nineties, we knew we had to stay home this year. Kenzie was crushed. We crawled into bed and cuddled until we fell back to sleep. Later, Kenzie, Terry and I went out in search of an open restaurant, driving for over an hour before we finally admitted defeat and pulled into the nearest IHOP. Kenzie was thrilled, though, with his giant omelet and 2 (!) huge pancakes. Add to that a glass of orange juice, and he was a happy camper.
From there, we headed off to the only theatre in town still playing the 3D version of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. Wow. I truly wasn’t prepared for it to be so good. I hadn’t seen it on the big screen (though I’d watched our dvd well over a dozen times, certainly), and I never realized how much I was missing. I mean, I never even noticed Zero’s nose is a jack-o-lantern! Every scene held a new surprise. And, the 3D effects were spectacular. If it’s still playing where you are, I’d highly recommend checking it out before it’s gone. Oh, and sit in one of the first few rows….
We came home after that, and I cleaned while KGSR played tracks from their previous Broadcasts cds. Man…. It’s still on, in fact. Right now, it’s Suzanne Vega singing Gypsy - just her and a guitar (the way it should be). If only they’d play this sort of music every day…. Sigh….
We each had a slice of peppermint cheesecake (indescribably wonderful - much better than it sounds), and then Terry went to work. His store opened for Black Friday at midnight. Why anyone needs to buy gourmet snacks at 4 in the morning, I have no idea. So, I baked some bread, poured a glass of white wine, and devoured an entire novel - How to Be Lost by Amanda Eyre Ward. The writing wasn’t spectacular, but the storyline was wonderfully engrossing. Kenzie read some Greek myths, wrote a bit on one of his novels, and then went to play with his action figures, taking a few choice pieces of bread to the bedroom with him.
And, now, we should both probably be getting to sleep. It’s nearing 3 AM here. It wasn’t the Thanksgiving we were expecting, but it’s definitely one we’ll remember.
