Birthday Cake for Breakfast
February 12th, 2006 at 12:49 pm (Unschooling Life)
Well, the presents have been unwrapped, the pizza has been scarfed down, the candles have been blown out. Kenzie’s birthday was a roaring success, judging by the number of elated screams we heard yesterday. Dragon books, old Pokemon Gameboy games, a magic kit, “The Voyage of the Basset,” trivia games, a photo-mosaic puzzle, a build-it-yourself mechanical dinosaur (with hilarious instructions translated from Japanese), a paper airplane kit, assorted books, a magnet set, dragon tattoos…. Hooray for Goodwill!
Right now, he’s playing Pokemon Blue on his Gameboy. A present from his grandparents, it was used, of course (Pokemon Blue is quite an old game), and when he popped it in to play, he found that the last owner had a level 100 character and two level 60 characters. What a fun surprise!
Eight years old. What an amazingly cool kid.
In magazine news, I’m in the thick of editing for the next issue. In my mind, I keep calling this the “Big Thoughts” issue, as so many of the articles I’ve received have been truly enlightening, looking at unschooling in unique ways. More on this later. For now, I think I’ll join Kenzie in having some birthday cake for breakfast.

Ok, the suspense is killing me….is my article one of those “big thoughts”?

Hey Miranda -
How funny! You were posting this just as I was emailing you! Yes, yours is one of those “big thoughts” articles that I’m still so thrilled about receiving. (For others reading this - here’s a little peek at Miranda’s article: “Okay, so what would an unschooling curriculum look like?”)

Wow, 8. Happy belated birthday Kenzie. Blue Pokemon is a favorite in this house–ours was used as well. Even I play it. ROFL! Gotta love Goodwill. I love treasures and it’s so fun going on the hunt.

When I was growing up, we had a family tradition of birthday cake for breakfast. R and I have continued it…
And a belated Happy Birthday to Kenzie!
